Agriculture is rarely rewarding when unpredictable weather, pests and diseases often make farming a gamble. But agricultural entrepreneur Shafiqul Islam of Rajshahi’s Bagha upazila defied the odds thanks to a modern farming technology: Polynet house. Leveraging a government project for promoting polynet houses, Islam decided to cultivate mainly capsicum in July last year. He was paid off handsomely as his premium crop found a ready market among foreigners in the region and high-end restaurants. An altercation between NGO officials and government agricultural scientists broke out at a workshop in Rajshahi Circuit House yesterday, which was attended by Agriculture Minister Md Abdus Shahid. The workshop was jointly organised by DASCOH, World Bank's 2030 Water Resources Group (2030 WRG), and Coca-Cola Bangladesh Limited. A Rajshahi-based farming company is exporting Gourmoti and Katimon varieties of mango to Russia. An Air Arabia flight left Dhaka for Russia Saturday morning with 200kg of Gourmoti and 75kg Katimon mangoes, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).  "This is the first time Bangladeshi mangoes are making an entry to Russia," said Mafizul Islam, deputy director (export) at the Plant Quarantine Wing of the department. The farming company MTB Agro and Garden collected the mangoes from the orchards of a farmer named Najim Uddin in Nachole upazila of Chapainawabganj, he added. Farmers had been complaining against Sakhawat Hossain, the deep tube-well operator of Issoripur village in Rajshahi's Godagari, for not supplying irrigation and drinking water over last two years. But the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) ignored those. At least 150 farmers irrigate 250 bighs from that tube-well. Amid lax monitoring by the authorities, many deep tube-well operators have been depriving small farmers in Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj and Naogaon of their fair share of water for irrigation. Those operators delay releasing water from their pumps, which leads to frequent crop loss for the farmers. Thrown in a situation they simply cannot cope with, the farmers are then forced into selling their land or leasing out land to others. Many of them leave farming for good and become day labourers to survive. The anxiety deepens as the irrigation machines cannot pump up water properly due to drop in the underground water level in the Barind tract under Rajshahi, Naogaon and Chapainawabganj districts. Against this backdrop, Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) has started recommending boro growers to cultivate other crops like wheat, maize and pulses that are relatively less dependant on irrigation. The BMDA also sent notices to its branches in 25 upazilas in the three districts asking them to ensure irrigation of no more than 100 bighas of land with every deep tube-well despite the growers' demand for more.
