রাজশাহী ও বগুড়া অঞ্চলের কৃষকরা বাংলাদেশের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে বেশী সরিষা চাষ করে থাকেন। সর্ষে চাষে কম খরচের কারণে বর্গা চাষীরাই বেশী আগ্রহী হন। বিলগুলোতে সরিষা চাষ পদ্ধতিও সহজ। ডিসেম্বর-জানুয়ারীতে সরিষা গাছে ফুল ফুটলে হলুদ রঙে রাঙানো সর্ষে জমিগুলো পর্যটকদের আকর্ষণ করে। গত বছর আড়াই মাসের আবাদ শেষে সরিষার জমিতে রোগ ছড়িয়ে পড়লে কৃষক ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়েছিলেন। এবছর তারা আশা দেখছেন। জমিতে তাজা ফুলগুলো দুলতে দেখে কৃষকের মুখেও ফুটেছে হাসি। তারপরও তাদের হাসিতে সতর্কতাও আছে।

The cause of Sultana Jasmine's death was brain haemorrhage due to excessive stress and a sudden rise in blood pressure, forensic experts of Rajshahi Medical College said yesterday. "As her blood pressure shot up due to stress, two blood vessels inside her brain swelled up and ruptured, causing internal bleeding," Kafil Uddin, associate professor and head of RMC's forensic medicine department, said while explaining the outcome of the autopsy to reporters who went to the hospital for updates. A man staged a solo protest today against "torture and harassment" by Rajshahi-3 lawmaker Md Ayeen Uddin and his aides. The common perception about mangoes is that they mature early in the country's north-western districts. The Himalayan slope in the north sees more acute winters and summers than any other district, and this has fuelled the idea. But a recent study proved a different theory. The study found that the country's hilly terrain, which is closest to the sea, where there is less difference in temperature, ripens mangoes faster. After the hills, the fastest rates of maturity were measured in Khulna, Rajshahi and Rangpur regions. The study also shows that any variety of mango in the country's northern part takes at least three weeks more to mature when compared to the hilly regions' rate.
