Bank brokers cheat peasants
A HANDFUL of well organised brokers have turned Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) branches into their veritable paradise, according to a newspaper report, as they have been cheating innocent and poor people who take loans from 17 bank branches in this district. The brokers are adopting various methods to cheat the needy people coming to seek loans from all the Krishi Bank branches. The brokers give loan-seekers an impression that they would never be able to get loans if they don't share a small percentage of the same with the employees of the bank branches; and offer help to expedite the process of getting loan if they do agree. The brokers in connivance with bank officials and employees have fixed rather a permanent rate of 10 per cent deal from the loan-takers as a practice for long in the district.
The brokers' gang has gone to the extent of fooling mostly illiterate and poor farmers into putting thumb-impressions assuring them of some money to help them as they are in dire need. They are told if they just put their signature or thumb-impression on some papers the money they would get would not be treated as loan. After taking thumb-impression the brokers give Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,500 to each of the persons against actual disbursement of bank loans of Tk 10,000 to Tk 15,000 against their loan applications. In this way the brokers of the Teesta branch of the Krishi Bank have cheated more than 100 poor people of Rajpur union under Sadar upazila alone in last several years as reported by Lalmonirhat correspondent of a Dhaka-based newspaper recently.
The poor people who took the money fall from the sky when they are served with bank notices for repayment of loans which, in fact, they did not receive save the small amount of either Tk 1,000 or Tk 1,500 against their actual loans of Tk.10,000 or Tk 15,000 granted by RAKUB branches. The report cited a name of one Mantu Mia of village Jagotbar under Raipur union for an example to show how he was deprived of his loan money by the brokers in connivance with the bank branch employees as two brokers approached him saying that the Teesta branch of the RAKUB would give some non-refundable amounts of money if he only gave thumb-impression on some bank papers.
Mantu Mia in good faith gave his thumb impression in the month of June 2005 but was paid only Tk 1,000. But in the first week of March this year a bank notice reached him like a bombshell asking him to repay an amount of Tk 12,800 along with interest for the loan of Tk 11,000 shown against his name. An urgent investigation should be conducted in this regard to curb heinous crimes like this and bring the corrupt section of the bank employees along with the brokers to book.
