The common perception about mangoes is that they mature early in the country's north-western districts. The Himalayan slope in the north sees more acute winters and summers than any other district, and this has fuelled the idea. But a recent study proved a different theory. The study found that the country's hilly terrain, which is closest to the sea, where there is less difference in temperature, ripens mangoes faster. After the hills, the fastest rates of maturity were measured in Khulna, Rajshahi and Rangpur regions. The study also shows that any variety of mango in the country's northern part takes at least three weeks more to mature when compared to the hilly regions' rate. The study was published in the MDPI Sustainability journal of Switzerland on October 19. Abdul Malek was allocated a plot inside an industrial estate of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) in Rajshahi back in the 1970s. Devotees of Rajshahi and beyond will be in presence of magnificent idols of deities made of Ashtadhatu this Durga Puja, as the Taherpur temple of the district has commissioned idols made of the metal alloy considered sacred by Hindus. A total of seven idols of Hindu deities, including Durga and her four children, have been crafted for the temple using around a tonne of Ashtadhatu at a cost of around Tk 22 lakh, said Anil Kumar Sarker, general secretary of Rajshahi District Puja Udjapan Parishad. The "Durga Temple" in Taherpur of Rajshahi's Bagmara upazila.  The last generation of King Kansa Narayan Roy built the temple in the 18th century, in memory of the late king who first introduced the festival of Durga Puja in a universal manner ensuring participation of all castes of the Hindus, as the saying goes.  The temple's cleric Gopal Chandra Chakrawarty said the idol of Durga is available in the temple throughout the year. “After holding a Durga Puja, we keep idols until the next year for visitors. We immerse the old idols when new idols arrive,” he said.  These days, the temple has already lost much of its grandeur in the absence of much-needed renovation work.  In this regard, Kartik Saha, general secretary of the temple committee, said, “We maintain it [temple] with our limited resources. Rafiqul Islam, a resident of Rajshahi's Durgapur upazila, is breaking the mould when it comes to mango farming as he cultivates a non-traditional variety of the fruit called Katimon that grows year-round. And although most mango orchards make good tourist spots during the summer months, Islam's orchard on the bank of his leased pond is unlikely to attract anyone as the trees are no more than six feet tall. However, this is no cause for concern as despite being smaller in stature, these mango trees earn him far more money compared to traditional ones. "One has little chance of incurring losses cultivating Katimon mangoes," said Islam, an agricultural entrepreneur. He only harvests the fruit at the end of August, when the traditional mango season usually comes to an end. As a result, he faces no competition. An ancient stone with inscription on it has been found at Natore's Madhnagar village recently, bearing the history of a 155-year-old "Rath Jatra" festival. The inscription -- Sanskrit written in Bangla alphabets -- was done with lead on a piece of white stone. The family of Pintu Adhikari, a Hindu priest, has been preserving the stone at their residence. Department of Archaeology officials have declared it a "valuable piece of artifact". Nahid Sultana, deputy director of Rajshahi divisional archaeology department, said they would visit Madhnagar soon. "Such a stone cannot stay at a private house. It is a documentation of ancient history." This correspondent saw the stone during a recent visit to Madhnagar. Pintu Adhikari, who is also the president of the Bishnu temple committee, said the stone was on the temple's front wall. "The temple was destroyed in the 70s.   College Principal Salim Reza admitted to a probe committee that he was indeed assaulted by Rajshahi lawmaker Omor Faruk Chowdhury at the latter's chamber more than a week ago, according to two individuals who were present when Salim was talking to the committee members. Salim, principal of Rajbari Degree College in Godagari upazila, termed the assault a "planned" one when he was interviewed by the three-member committee on Friday morning, the sources told The Daily Star. During the interview at Salim's home in Rajshahi, the committee members headed by National University (NU) Registrar Molla Mahfuz Al-Hossain talked to the principal alone and also in presence of his family members and relatives. May 17, 2018 The sweet scent of mango is in the air once again. But, instead of rejoicing, Rajshahi's orchardists are feeling uneasy. And the cause for their concern is the perplexing government attitude towards export of organic mangoes. The organic mango growers in the region had invested earnestly to improve cultivation methods, prodded by an industry crisis several years ago brought about by excessive chemical use on mango crops. They introduced the fruit-bagging method, which drastically cuts down the number of times mangoes are sprayed with pesticides before reaching the market. Bagged mangoes are sprayed with pesticides about three times, in contrast to 62 times under the unethically-grown non-bagging method. Organic mango growers naturally hoped to benefit from increased exports. A new water ATM system was inaugurated in Rajshahi city yesterday to provide drinking water at a low price and address the city dwellers' problem of accessing drinking water. Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton inaugurated the system at Shahmakhdum Dargah point. Water ATM booths have also been installed in Laxmipur, Martyred Qamaruzzaman Zoo and Bahrampur intersections. A booth will supply 20,000 litres of water from 8:00am-8:00pm each day. Under the service, one litre of water will cost Tk 0.80 and 62 litres will be available at Tk 50. RCC will expand the network of water ATMs to ward level depending on the pilot's success, said the mayor. There would be an operator at each booth who would distribute ATM cards to residents. An ATM card will cost Tk 50 and 62 litres of water would be available at every recharge of Tk 50. Shamsul Huda, a beneficiary of the government's social safety net programmes, lives in a rickety little tin- shack in Noboganga area under Paba upazila of Rajshahi. With a mud-oven and two bamboo benches out front, the ramshackle structure resembles a shop more than it does a home. However, this is with good reason as Huda once used to sell tea and dry food items from the stall. "But it has become by home now," the 82-year-old said while describing how the government allowance he receives has fallen short of protecting him from complete poverty. Huda was 65 when he first started getting an old age allowance from the government in 2005. The shop still provided an income at the time and his sons where there to help out too. "I was doing well back then with all these helps," he said. But even though the monthly old age allowance was increased to Tk 500 from Tk 180 in fiscal year 2016-17, Huda's growing age and deteriorating health eventually caught up to him.
