রাজশাহীর পবা উপজেলায় আমান কোল্ড স্টোরেজে রাখা আলুতে পচন ধরেছে। হিমাগারের শীতলীকরণ যন্ত্রের ত্রুটির কারণে আলু পচে যাওয়ার অভিযোগ তুলে কৃষকরা হিমাগার কর্তৃপক্ষের কাছে ক্ষতিপূরণ দাবি করছেন। হিমাগার কর্তৃপক্ষের হিসাব অনুযায়ী, এখানে ১ লাখ ৬৬ হাজার বস্তা আলু আছে। ৫০ কেজির প্রতি বস্তা আলুর বর্তমান দাম ৬০০ টাকা। সব আলু নষ্ট হয়ে গেলে ক্ষতি হবে প্রায় ১০ কোটি টাকা। কৃষকদের দাবি, সব আলু পচে গেছে। বস্তায় একটা আলু পচে যাওয়া মানে সব আলু নষ্ট হওয়া। এগুলো আর খাওয়ার উপযোগী থাকে না। হিমাগারটিতে এমন পরিস্থিতিই তৈরি হয়েছে। আজ বুধবার সকালে শীতাতপ নিয়ন্ত্রিত গুদাম ঘর থেকে আলুর বস্তা বের করে হিমাগারের ভেতরেই বাতাস দেওয়া হচ্ছিল। তখনই কৃষকরা আলু পচে যাওয়ার কথা জানতে পারেন। ক্ষতিপূরণের দাবিতে তারা হিমাগারের সামনে বিক্ষোভ করতে থাকেন। হিমাগার কর্তৃপক্ষ আগামী ১০ দিনের মধ্যে তাদের ক্ষতিপূরণ দেওয়ার আশ্বাস দেয়। এরপর কৃষকেরা শান্ত হন। বিকেলে হিমাগারে গিয়ে দেখা গেছে, যে বস্তা খোলা হচ্ছে সেখান থেকেই বের হচ্ছে পচা আলু। হিমাগারের সামনে আলু চাষি ও ব্যবসায়ীরা অভিযোগ করেন, হিমাগারের গ্যাস মেশিন খারাপ থাকার পরও আলু তোলা হয়েছে।

রাজশাহীর পুঠিয়ায় মাটি ফেলে পাকা সড়ক নষ্ট করার অভিযোগে এমআর ব্রিকসের মালিক জেহের মোহাম্মদকে ৩ লাখ টাকা জরিমানা করা হয়েছে। আজ বুধবার দুপুরে উপজেলা নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তা নুরুল হাই মোহাম্মদ আনাস ভ্রাম্যমান আদালত পরিচালনা করে এই অর্থদণ্ডাদেশ দেন। তিনি জানান, রাজশাহীতে এমআর নামে একটি ইটভাটা উপজেলার ধোকড়াকূল এলাকায় পুঠিয়া-তাহেরপুর আঞ্চলিক সড়কের উপর মাটি ফেলে সড়কটি নষ্ট করে ফেলেছেন বলে অভিযোগ তুলেছেন এলাকাবাসী। সড়ক নষ্ট হয়ে যাওয়ার কারণে জনসাধারণকে অনেক ভোগান্তি পোহাতে হচ্ছে। ইট ভাটার মালিককে বার বার সতর্ক করার পরেও তিনি তা শোনেননি বলে জানান এই কর্মকর্তা। তিনি বলেন, 'আজ সরেজমিনে অভিযোগের সত্যতা পাওয়ায় ওই ইটভাটার মালিককে ৩ লাখ টাকা জরিমানা করা হয়।'

A court in Naogaon on Sunday sent the headmaster of Daul Barbakpur High School of Mohadebpur upazila to jail for his role behind the hijab controversy. Dharani Kanta Burman, the headmaster, appeared before the court of the senior judicial magistrate in Naogaon and sought bail in the case filed by Amodini Paul, the assistant headmistress of the school. The court heard from Dharani's lawyer and rejected his bail prayer. On April 6, Amodini scolded some students for not wearing school dresses during the assembly. The next day, around hundred locals laid siege to the school and ransacked its furniture blaming Amodini for scolding the students for not wearing hijab, instead of school dresses. Later, a committee, formed by the Mohadebpur upazila administration, investigated the incident and found some of the school teachers were involved in sparking off religious tension in the village by fabricating stories. The controversy surrounding a Hindu teacher in Naogaon was an attempt to cover up a long-running corruption by a small section of the school authorities, according to staffers. Amodini Paul, the assistant headmistress of Daul Barbakpur High School in Naogaon's Mohadevpur, was framed to look contentious by the section to prevent her from taking over from the school's outgoing headmaster, The Daily Star learnt after speaking with a host of staffers. The section wanted one of their own to succeed Dharani Kanta Barman as the school's headteacher but Paul was chosen on the recommendation of Mohd. However, this craft, popularly made in Rajshahi, and a symbol of art and culture -- is ceasing to exist due to a lack of support. Sushanta Kumar Paul (62), award-winning maestro of artisanal pottery from Bashantapur, Rajshahi, and his family members are considered to be the last potters in the country who have been preserving the craft. But at present, many of Paul's family members have started engaging in agriculture alongside pottery for survival. A new water ATM system was inaugurated in Rajshahi city yesterday to provide drinking water at a low price and address the city dwellers' problem of accessing drinking water. Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton inaugurated the system at Shahmakhdum Dargah point. Water ATM booths have also been installed in Laxmipur, Martyred Qamaruzzaman Zoo and Bahrampur intersections. A booth will supply 20,000 litres of water from 8:00am-8:00pm each day. Under the service, one litre of water will cost Tk 0.80 and 62 litres will be available at Tk 50. RCC will expand the network of water ATMs to ward level depending on the pilot's success, said the mayor.  There would be an operator at each booth who would distribute ATM cards to residents.
