The Rajshahi Zilla Parishad has begun constructing the city's first Central Shaheed Minar on its own land in Sonadighi area. The parishad's chairman Mir Iqbal formally inaugurated the construction work today. The construction is slated to be completed at less than half of the cost estimated by Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) earlier for the project, reports our Rajshahi correspondent. The one-acre land of the construction site earlier housed Rajshahi Survey Institute. In 2020, after the institute vacated the site, the RCC initiated the process of constructing the Central Shaheed Minar. On December 16, 2020, Language Movement veteran late Ghulam Arieff Tipoo laid the foundation stone. RCC floated a tender for the project in November 2022, and later approved a contractor to begin the construction in January 2023 at an estimated cost of Tk 16 lakh. Police today Thursday a man for cutting and uprooting flowering trees on a road divider and footpath of a road in the Kashiadanga area of Rajshahi City Corporation. On Wednesday, some people cut off at least 125 trees leaving the stumps, and uprooted around 50 more flowering trees of different species there. The incident occurred between 10.30am and 11.30am on an area stretching 500 meters on the bypass road from Sayergachha to Kashiadanga intersection. The arrestee Naim Islam, 25, of the Haldarpara area of the city, claimed that they cut the trees as those were obstructing the drivers' view, especially on the bends of the road causing accidents. The trees were of Karabi, musanda, big rangan, and mini rangan flower varieties, said Syed Mahmud Ul Islam, environment development officer of Rajshahi City Corporation. Forged Rajshahi City Corporation documents -- with the name of Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton -- were used for signing a deal worth $10.12 million for procuring eight fire trucks from a South Korean company. The frauds used the name of the mayor and swindled $78,893 from the South Korean Shinshin Global Company Limited. Liton, also a presidium member of Awami League, disclosed the information this afternoon at a press conference at Rajshahi Nagar Bhaban auditorium. "We were completely unaware of the deal. We do not have the authority to sign such a deal with any foreign company," Liton said, adding that fire trucks were never essential for any city corporation in Bangladesh and there is a separate department for using these trucks.
