Police today Thursday a man for cutting and uprooting flowering trees on a road divider and footpath of a road in the Kashiadanga area of Rajshahi City Corporation. On Wednesday, some people cut off at least 125 trees leaving the stumps, and uprooted around 50 more flowering trees of different species there. The incident occurred between 10.30am and 11.30am on an area stretching 500 meters on the bypass road from Sayergachha to Kashiadanga intersection. The arrestee Naim Islam, 25, of the Haldarpara area of the city, claimed that they cut the trees as those were obstructing the drivers' view, especially on the bends of the road causing accidents. The trees were of Karabi, musanda, big rangan, and mini rangan flower varieties, said Syed Mahmud Ul Islam, environment development officer of Rajshahi City Corporation. "Most of the trees were bearing flowers. It was sad to see those cut off," Mahmud said adding that he filed a complaint with Kashiadanga police station in this

  Angry protests erupted at Rajshahi University on Monday as a section of leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League unit at the campus demanded the dissolution of its newly announced committee. The protesters declared the new committee bearers ‘undesirable’ and threatened to resist their entry into the campus. They alleged that some of the new leaders are controversial and do not have the support of the student body. On Saturday after a break of seven years, the central BCL announced the new committee of RU BCL naming Mostafijur Rahman Babu as president and Assadullah Al Galib as general secretary. Rajshahi University syndicate in a meeting on Sunday decided to relieve Prof Md Enamul Haque, a teacher of the Department of Psychology of all his professional duties for two years. The punitive action against the professor was for sexually harassing two of his colleagues in the department in May, more than one syndicate member told The Daily Star on Monday. Once the decision takes effect, the professor would not be able to perform any academic, administrative, and examination duties during the punishment period, they said. “The decision was taken following the high court division’s guidelines of 2010 on prevention of sexual harassment on campuses,” said Assistant Prof Sadiqul Islam Sagor, one of the syndicate members. On April 9, Mukul Soren, a Santal farmer in Rajshahi, drank pesticide in a suicide attempt over not getting irrigation water from the same deep tubewell that allegedly led to the suicide of two farmers, also Santals, last year. All three were fed up with the exploitative system of irrigation water distribution in parts of the Barind region. The Barind region, known as the rice bowl of Bangladesh, faces a great catastrophe with its groundwater levels depleting fast. In this water-stressed region, irrigation tubewells have now become a tool for the people with political clout to exploit farmers. A significant number of these farmers belong to ethnic minority communities and are therefore more vulnerable to exploitation.   A team of 50 Indian bicyclists visited the Mughal-era Bagha Mosque in Rajshahi’s Bagha upazila on Sunday. The team’s Rajshahi visit was a part of their two-week journey from Kolkata, India to Noakhali of Bangladesh under the banner of the India-Bangladesh Goodwill Cycle Rally. Snehalaya, an Indian NGO, organized the rally jointly with the Rotary Club of Belur and Gandhi Ashram Trust, to spread the teachings of Bapu Mahatma Gandhi and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The cyclists' team started their journey from Gandhi Bhaban in Kolkata on September 15. They ran some 420km inside India to reach to Malda on September 21. Entering Bangladesh on September 22, they visited Chapainawabganj before reaching Rajshahi. The rising quantity of mango exports has been changing the farming practices of the fruit in the Rajshahi region as farmers are now opting for more chemical-free mango production, agriculturists say. Farmers are now gradually adopting organic farming methods as they intend to meet the high standards, required by the international markets. This year, a total of 92,913 hectares of land has been brought under mango cultivation in Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, and Natore, said Md Shamsul Wadud, regional additional director at Rajshahi Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE). A farm labourer covers a mango with a fruit bag that protects the fruit from pests, insects, rains, storms, and hailstorms.   But, safe or chemical-free mangoes were grown on only 630 hectares of land this year, which was around 500 hectares last year, said the DAE official. They have a plan to extend the area to 728 hectares next year, he said.

A Rajshahi-based farming company is exporting Gourmoti and Katimon varieties of mango to Russia. An Air Arabia flight left Dhaka for Russia Saturday morning with 200kg of Gourmoti and 75kg Katimon mangoes, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).  "This is the first time Bangladeshi mangoes are making an entry to Russia," said Mafizul Islam, deputy director (export) at the Plant Quarantine Wing of the department. The farming company MTB Agro and Garden collected the mangoes from the orchards of a farmer named Najim Uddin in Nachole upazila of Chapainawabganj, he added. Md Mahtab Ali, CEO of the MTB Agro, said, a Russian company called National Electric LLC, which worked for the Rooppur power plant, is importing the mangoes. "We have been trying for the last three years. This time, we saw success by ensuring good farming practices through many laboratory tests, and overcoming bureaucratic tangles," he said. SME Foundation established a Common Facility Centre (CFC) for the shoemakers of Kaluhati village in Rajshahi’s Charghat upazila on Friday. The CFC, set up on a 3000 square-feet site at the village, was provided with 13 state-of-the-art machines for leather cutting, stitching, and finishing, said Dr Md Mafizur Rahman, Managing Director of SME Foundation. The facility would help the shoemakers to improve the quality of their products using modern technologies, he said. “Our dependence on imported leather goods will be lessened once the initiative turns out a success,” said Dr Rahman. The initiative is the first of its kind in the country, said Md Shohrub Hossain, Charghat upazila Nirbahi officer. Bidyut Kumar Mondol, a farmer from Kamardha village in Naogaon's Porsha upazila, finds himself grappling with a challenging predicament. He had prepared 23 bighas of land for cultivating Aman paddy, but his dreams have been thwarted by a relentless lack of water.
