A Rajshahi-based farming company is exporting Gourmoti and Katimon varieties of mango to Russia. An Air Arabia flight left Dhaka for Russia Saturday morning with 200kg of Gourmoti and 75kg Katimon mangoes, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).  "This is the first time Bangladeshi mangoes are making an entry to Russia," said Mafizul Islam, deputy director (export) at the Plant Quarantine Wing of the department. The farming company MTB Agro and Garden collected the mangoes from the orchards of a farmer named Najim Uddin in Nachole upazila of Chapainawabganj, he added. Md Mahtab Ali, CEO of the MTB Agro, said, a Russian company called National Electric LLC, which worked for the Rooppur power plant, is importing the mangoes. "We have been trying for the last three years. This time, we saw success by ensuring good farming practices through many laboratory tests, and overcoming bureaucratic tangles," he said. রাজশাহীর পবা উপজেলায় আমান কোল্ড স্টোরেজে রাখা আলুতে পচন ধরেছে। হিমাগারের শীতলীকরণ যন্ত্রের ত্রুটির কারণে আলু পচে যাওয়ার অভিযোগ তুলে কৃষকরা হিমাগার কর্তৃপক্ষের কাছে ক্ষতিপূরণ দাবি করছেন। হিমাগার কর্তৃপক্ষের হিসাব অনুযায়ী, এখানে ১ লাখ ৬৬ হাজার বস্তা আলু আছে। ৫০ কেজির প্রতি বস্তা আলুর বর্তমান দাম ৬০০ টাকা। সব আলু নষ্ট হয়ে গেলে ক্ষতি হবে প্রায় ১০ কোটি টাকা। কৃষকদের দাবি, সব আলু পচে গেছে। বস্তায় একটা আলু পচে যাওয়া মানে সব আলু নষ্ট হওয়া। এগুলো আর খাওয়ার উপযোগী থাকে না। হিমাগারটিতে এমন পরিস্থিতিই তৈরি হয়েছে। আজ বুধবার সকালে শীতাতপ নিয়ন্ত্রিত গুদাম ঘর থেকে আলুর বস্তা বের করে হিমাগারের ভেতরেই বাতাস দেওয়া হচ্ছিল। তখনই কৃষকরা আলু পচে যাওয়ার কথা জানতে পারেন। ক্ষতিপূরণের দাবিতে তারা হিমাগারের সামনে বিক্ষোভ করতে থাকেন। হিমাগার কর্তৃপক্ষ আগামী ১০ দিনের মধ্যে তাদের ক্ষতিপূরণ দেওয়ার আশ্বাস দেয়। এরপর কৃষকেরা শান্ত হন। বিকেলে হিমাগারে গিয়ে দেখা গেছে, যে বস্তা খোলা হচ্ছে সেখান থেকেই বের হচ্ছে পচা আলু। হিমাগারের সামনে আলু চাষি ও ব্যবসায়ীরা অভিযোগ করেন, হিমাগারের গ্যাস মেশিন খারাপ থাকার পরও আলু তোলা হয়েছে।

While the probe committee from the Ministry of Agriculture visited Rajshahi's Godagari upazila today, many farmers elaborately told them that the death of two santal farmers was primarily because the operator deprived them of irrigation water. They told the committee members that the deep tube-well operator Sakhawat Hossain deprived the small farmers and gave water to his choicest farmers in return for bribes. Farmers had been complaining against Sakhawat Hossain, the deep tube-well operator of Issoripur village in Rajshahi's Godagari, for not supplying irrigation and drinking water over last two years. But the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) ignored those. At least 150 farmers irrigate 250 bighs from that tube-well. This issue came to the fore when two Santal farmers drank pesticides on Wednesday near the tube-well allegedly after they were denied irrigation water supply. Abhinath Mardi died that night and his cousin Robi Mardi on Friday night. The deep tube-well operator, who is being held responsible by the family of Santal farmer Abhinath Mardi for instigating his suicide in Rajshahi's Godagari Wednesday, has gone into hiding, said police. Amid lax monitoring by the authorities, many deep tube-well operators have been depriving small farmers in Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj and Naogaon of their fair share of water for irrigation. Those operators delay releasing water from their pumps, which leads to frequent crop loss for the farmers. Thrown in a situation they simply cannot cope with, the farmers are then forced into selling their land or leasing out land to others. Many of them leave farming for good and become day labourers to survive. The anxiety deepens as the irrigation machines cannot pump up water properly due to drop in the underground water level in the Barind tract under Rajshahi, Naogaon and Chapainawabganj districts. The last date for completing recruitment of 10,629 retailers under 1,600 fertiliser dealers appointed by Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) in 85 municipalities and 1096 unions in 16 northern districts expired on September 30.
