In the immediate aftermath of February 21, 1952, residents of Rajshahi went to work and built a Shaheed Minar near the Muslim Hostel premises of Rajshahi Government College. The Shaheed Minar still stands today, though not with as much prestige as Dhaka's Central Shaheed Minar is afforded. In fact, the entirety of Rajshahi city doesn't have a Central Shaheed Minar, which means on the International Mother Language Day, people pay homage to the martyrs at the ones at Bhubanmohan Park Memorial and the court area. In light of this, Language Movement veterans started demanding the preservation of the Muslim Hostel Shaheed Minar, which led Rajshahi City Corporation to take up a project in this regard in October 2018. Forged Rajshahi City Corporation documents -- with the name of Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton -- were used for signing a deal worth $10.12 million for procuring eight fire trucks from a South Korean company. The frauds used the name of the mayor and swindled $78,893 from the South Korean Shinshin Global Company Limited. Liton, also a presidium member of Awami League, disclosed the information this afternoon at a press conference at Rajshahi Nagar Bhaban auditorium. "We were completely unaware of the deal. We do not have the authority to sign such a deal with any foreign company," Liton said, adding that fire trucks were never essential for any city corporation in Bangladesh and there is a separate department for using these trucks. He said the city corporation lodged a general diary in this regard with Boalia Police Station and informed the cybercrime unit of Bangladesh Police and government high-ups. It has been twelve years since the gruesome murder of Rajshahi University student Faruk Hossain in the early hours of February 9, 2010. However, the case trial, pinning top-tier leaders of Jamaat and Chhatra Shibir, has seen little to no progress. The trial began at Rajshahi metropolitan additional session judge's court by framing charges in July 2019, after a nine-year-long police investigation came to an end. For over two-and-a-half years, the date for hearing prosecution witnesses have been deferred many times due to the pandemic, according to public prosecutor Siraji Shawkat Salehin. He also expressed his doubts to this correspondent over the possibility of any progress on February 13, the next date for hearing. রাজশাহীর শিউলি আক্তারের বিয়ে হয় আজ থেকে ১৩ বছর আগে যখন তিনি চারঘাট উপজেলার সরদহ সরকারী উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ে নবম শ্রেণির ছাত্রী। উচ্চশিক্ষা অর্জনের স্বপ্নে গোড়াতেই বাধা হয়ে দাঁড়ায় বাল্যবিয়ে। পরিবারের অসহনীয় দারিদ্র্যের কারণে মেয়েকে বিয়ে দেন বাবা। কিন্তু বিয়ের পর সুখ জোটেনি শিউলির কপালে। তাকে তার শ্বশুরবাড়ি থেকে বের করে দেওয়া হয়। বলা হয়েছিল, হয় শ্বশুরবাড়ি নয়তো লেখাপড়া যে কোনো একটা বেছে নিতে হবে। শিউলি পরেরটিই বেছে নিয়েছিলেন। দারিদ্র্য, বাল্যবিবাহ এবং নির্যাতনের সব বাধা অতিক্রম করে শিউলি এ বছর জানুয়ারি মাসে রাজশাহীর বারিন্দ মেডিকেল কলেজ থেকে এমবিবিএস ডিগ্রি নিয়ে চিকিৎসক হয়েছেন। সম্প্রতি তার কলেজে ও বাসায় এই প্রতিবেদকের সঙ্গে আলাপকালে শিউলি জানান তার জীবনের লড়াইয়ের গল্প। সরদহ সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ে পড়ার সময়ই লেখাপড়ার প্রতি আগ্রহ জন্মেছিল। তখনও তার পরিবারের কোনো দূরবর্তী সদস্যও স্কুলের গন্ডি পার হতে পারেনি। 'আমি স্কুলে পড়া ছেলেমেয়েদের এবং তাদের কথা বলা, চরাফেরার ধরন দেখতাম। আমি তাদের মতো পড়তে চেয়েছিলাম।' শিউলি শুনেছিল যে শুধুমাত্র সবচেয়ে মেধাবী ছাত্রছাত্রীরা সরদহ সরকারী উচ্চ
