BNP, Jamaat in Rajshahi-3 locked in internal feuds

In Rajshahi-3 (Paba-Mohonpur) constituency, grand alliance candidate Miraj Uddin Mollah is in a better position than the candidates of four-party alliance belonging to BNP and Jamaat-e Islami who are locked in internal feuds. Former BNP lawmaker Kabir Hossain is fighting here with the symbol of paddy sheaf against Rajshahi city Jamaat Ameer Ataur Rahman with scale symbol. Voters said Miraj has intensified his campaign as his chances of winning the seat has become brighter amid fighting between Kabir and Ataur. It was attempt to kill me: Omar Faruk

Published On: 2008-12-23 Awami League candidate Omar Faruk Chowdhury in Rajshahi-1 constituency yesterday expressed concern over security of grand alliance candidates following an attack on him during campaign on the previous night.At a press conference at his house in the city, Omar Faruk said the attack was an attempt to kill him. He demanded his security or return of his legal firearm.Rajshahi mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton who was present at the press conference apprehended that political godfathers of terrorists might have masterminded the attack fearing their defeat in the upcoming election.Omar Faruk came under the attack at Buraburi crossing under Pachondor union in Tanore upazila at around midnight Saturday night while he was returning after campaign in Mundumala municipal area.The terrorists barricaded his road by placing a tree and with two trucks and two microbuses. Three Martyred Intellectuals of RU

Mir Abdul Quayyum Pakistani occupation forces with their local collaborators masterminded the systematic elimination of our intellectuals. Beginning on March 25, the massacre continued till the surrender of the Pakistani army on December 16. The long list of our martyred intellectuals includes three from Rajshahi University (RU). Prof Mir Abdul Quayyum is one of them. He was a teacher of the Psychology Department. Born on July 6, 1939 at Ghagra village of Gafargaon in Mymensingh, he graduated from RU in 1962. Working as a research assistant and demonstrator for two years, he later joined the psychology department as a lecturer. During his days on the campus as both student and teacher, Quayyum was known for his free and secular thinking. He did not hesitate to speak of independence even when it could pose a grave risk.
