Minu paid taxes revealing obscure sources of income

Anxious at recent actions against illegal luxury vehicles and wealth, Rajshahi Mayor and former BNP lawmaker Mizanur Rahman Minu paid off about Tk 9.36 lakh taxes last week to legalise his landed properties and costly vehicle bought at total Tk 86 lakh from obscure sources of income.

He bought a 5-katha plot in Banani of Dhaka, a luxury Toyota Lexus vehicle and a piece of one-katha land in the city’s Ranibazar area worth total Tk 86,53,000 during the end of his government’s tenure in 2006, said his lawyer Mozaharul Haq Bakul.

Minu paid off Tk 5.34 lakh through two separate drafts of Janata Bank, Rajshahi Ranibazar branch to deputy income tax commissioner of Rajshahi circle-2 for importing a luxury Japanese Toyota Lexus vehicle worth Tk 36 lakh on March 1.

The same day, he paid off Tk 2650 for a piece of one Katha land in Rajshahi city.

And on February 22, Minu paid off Tk 3, 99, 100 through a Markentile Bank draft for buying 5-katha plot in Bonani of Dhaka worth Tk 50 lakh.

But the taxes were paid under sections 19 BB and 19 BBB of income tax ordinance 1984 that was usually used in case of purchasing landed property and costly vehicles from obscure sources of money, said sources.

“The laws left scopes to anyone who possesses money outnumbering his legal sources of income to legalise the extra money by paying off taxes after purchasing landed property and vehicles”, explained an income tax lawyer Dewan Ezaz Hossain adding that the taxpayer must have a satisfactory explanation for the money.

Sources said, Minu spent from obscure income sources for the landed property and vehicle sanctioned for members of parliament and so he had to pay taxes for under Section 19 BB and 19 BBB.

Minu was never seen in the city using the Lexus.

Talking to newsmen, Minu said, he bought the vehicle and land under quota for parliament members. “I always abide by law and so paid off income taxes”.

He informed that not he, his friend called Nabil was now using his car as he actually paid for the vehicle.

He avoided answering as asked how his friend can use a vehicle sanctioned for MPs. He referred his lawyer Mozaharul Haq Bakul for details.

When contacted, Bakul said, the mayor’s honorarium and ancestral property were shown as sources of fund for purchasing Banani plot and land in Rajshahi.

He also informed, the vehicle was bought at Nabil’s money.
