Tiger dies in Rajshahi zoo

The lone Royal Bengal Tiger of Rajshahi Central Zoo Samrat died in his cage yesterday.Refuting allegations of poor care, zoo officials said the 17-year-old tiger died of old age related diseases.Samrat was weak during last three days and the tiger reduced its daily meal of 12kg meat, said zoo veterinary surgeon M Forhad Uddin. "Captive tigers usually live less than 20 years, the average lifespan of tigers in the wild," he said.Samrat was living without a companion since June, 1997, when he was brought to the zoo.

Monday, December 7, 2009 Passengers halted an intercity train for three hours at Panchbibi station in Joypurhat yesterday protesting carrying of smuggled goods in trains and alleged harassment by border troops in the name of raids. Hundreds of passengers got down from Barendra Express that runs between Nilphamari and Rajshahi when it arrived at Panchbibi station at around 10:00am and staged demonstration for three hours until 1:00pm. According to folklore, King Vishwanath dug a lake to address the people's drinking water problem, prompted by his queen's dream. The queen's stipulation was that the lake should be dug as far as she could walk barefoot. When the queen continued walking over a mile, the king's ministers intervened fearing a near impossible lake digging project. They stopped her by sprinkling alta (red dye) on her feet, claiming she was bleeding. The king then dug the lake from the starting point to where the queen stopped. And that's how the lake -- Altadighi -- came into existence in Naogaon around the 13th century. Another version suggests it was actually the king's mother, not his wife, who inspired the digging and the lake was dug during 10th century.
