Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Sarder Nurul Amin, who was the Security-in-charge during the Rajshahi University violence, was made officer-on-special-duty and was transferred to police headquarters yesterday.

Twenty eight other senior police personnel -- ranking between deputy inspectors general and additional deputy commissioner -- were also transferred to different places, said a source in police headquarters.

Sources said the government will take departmental actions against DC Sarder Nurul Amin for negligence in duties during the violence that deteriorated the law and order situation on RU campus and the city.

According to the source, Deputy Inspectors General Aftab Uddin Ahmed of police headquarters was made Police Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.

Assistant Inspector General (Media) Nazrul Islam was made superintendent of police of Chuadanga district. But no replacement to the post was made

Rajshahi city unit Jamaat-e-Islami general secretary was arrested yesterday in connection with Rajshahi University violence on February 9 while its detained assistant general secretary was placed on a five-day remand.

Rajshahi police also arrested seven Shibir activists while six more Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists were arrested at the capital and elsewhere in the country.

In Dhaka, at least 10 people including the Paltan police chief were injured in a clash between police and Jamaat-Shibir activists at Paltan when police tried to hinder their procession.

General Secretary Abul Kalam Azad of Rajshahi city unit Jamaat was arrested on charge of abetting Shibir cadres during the RU violence that left Chhatra League activist Faruk Hossain dead and several others injured, said Tarikul Islam, an assistant commissioner of the DB.

With Azad, police have so far arrested three top Jamaat leaders in Rajshahi in connection with the RU violence.

Meanwhile, Motihar police yesterday produced Assistant General Secretary of Rajshahi city unit Jamaat Siddik Hossain before a court seeking a 10-day remand. The court placed him on a five-day remand.

The seven detained Shibir men arrested yesterday at different places in the district include former Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute unit former president Tarique Saifullah.

Top police officials told The Daily Star that four city Jamaat leaders, an RU teacher and a RU syndicate member locally coordinated three Shibir groups during the RU violence after the mayhem was planned centrally in Dhaka.

In the capital, police arrested Jamaat-Shibir members Monir Hossain, Shamsul Alam and Ehtesham Billah when they brought out a procession demanding release of all the detained Jamaat-Shibir men and later clashed with police.

Witnesses said around five hundred leaders and activists of Jamaat and Shibir brought out the procession around 2:30pm. When police intercepted the procession Jamaat-Shibir men attacked the police prompting them to charge baton.

Officer-in-charge Mujibur Rahman of Paltan Police Station said he also sustained injuries along with several others.
